i’m still considering it..

i’m still considering it..

i am going to tell you about yesterday. a particularly bad day.

what happened? i woke up, princess was having problems with transferring dv footage from imac to dv cam, to vhs.

for some reason, he can’t do it under OS 9.0; there must be a conflict between MotoDV and OS 9.0. he can’t change the imac to any other system, because then Premiere, and Final Cut Pro won’t work. we decide to change the G3 to system 8.5..

remember that dropping back to a previous system, you have to do a clean install.. IE: reformat the hard drive.

geh.

right.. have to back up all my files. for the third time in 10 days.

ack. i’m out of blank CD’s. go through all my files from previous backups, trash anything that hasn’t changed. compile all new stuff into one folder.

realise that comes to about 80mb. that will fit on a zip disk.

good.

realize i have to save my preferences, and ICQ, Outlook Express, and IE user data. ack.. that’s another 50mb.

start stuffing my files. stuff the preferences as well. it all comes to 90mb, when stuffed.

great.

put it all on zip disk.

tell princess i’m done.

wait for princess to stop playing Lemmings..

go for a walk..

when i get back, he’s reinstalled the original OS 8.0, and upgraded to OS 8.5. transfer finished file of the extreme skating blargh video for Tim, from the imac. (this takes an hour)

download from G3 to dv cam. it’s done.

in the mean time, princess has been installing upgrades to Final Cut Pro, Premiere, OS 9.0.4, and QuickTime to the imac. odd….. Moto DV works now. better than ever before…….

contemplate hitting him with a solid blunt object.

reinstall 9.0 on the G3.

reinstall my files, first from the CD backups, then the zip disk.

half way through saving the stuffed preferences folder to the hard drive, the system locks up.

reboot.

try again. system locks up again. zip disk refuses to eject.

try again. same thing.

can’t get the preferences off the zip disk.

seriously consider hitting princess with a solid, sharp object.

it’s impossible. can’t get the preferences off the disk.

remember i have a previous version of the preferences from a few days ago. load that version off CD.

restart.

dial up.

start IE.

IE won’t work. something about missing Microsoft shared Library files.

try Outlook Express. same message.

hmm.. could reinstall Microsoft Office, that should load the Libraries. look for the Microsoft Office CD. can’t find it.. ask princess where it is.. “it should be there somewhere”.. keep looking. nowhere to be found. ask again.. “oh… hang on.. oh, never mind, i know where it is” “where?” “uhhh.. never mind” “Where?” “uhhh… Olivia’s got it…” “rrrrrrrrrrrr…… tirade of incoherent mumbling which would make Samuel L Jackson blush“.

start Netscape. it works.

download IE and Outlook Express. (1.5 hours)

trash old versions.

trash anything Microsoft, all hidden preferences, anything to do with them, except the cookies, history, favourites, and user data from Outlook.

reinstall both programs.

reboot.

open Outlook. set preferences, quit program. replace new user data with old user data. restart program.

huge sigh of relief still have my saved mail.

quit Outlook. start IE. set preferences. quit. plug in the cookies, the history, the favourites. restart IE. it works. it’s a version from a few days ago… but it works…..

i lost a few recent favorites.. and the registration code from SoundJam MP Plus. which i actually paid for…so i’m really pissed about that.. and i lost about 300 fonts. i’d reload them from the CD of fonts… but… uuhhh.. Olivia’s got that, too…….

the thing that pisses me off the most, is that all of this was ridiculously unnecessary… he got the imac working anyway… with the upgrades that i downloaded for him the night before…….

sigh
