Stayed friends with an ex, made funeral arrangements, stood up to my mother, and lived with my best friend

25th of October, the day my grandmother, and matriarch of the family, passed away.

Following through on plans that were laid for good reasons, and accepting things I didn’t like but were actually positive steps

Failure isn’t a word I use, however I learnt that I shouldn’t believe certain people when they have unseen motivations.

Yes, but it was nothing major

My discman

My mum, for standing up to her brothers after they treated her like crap.

Said goodbye to my parents [again], and spent the day being disappointed by Clay and amazed by my sister and Craig & Sara.

The chance to spend more time with my family [especially my sister and the kids]

Comfort, confidence, and packability

I stayed sane? That’s news to me..

eh, I tend to stay away from the idolization of celebrity

Oh lord that list is long. Highlights: The John Howard Education ‘Policies’; the mere existence of ‘woe-is-me-I’m-innocent’ Pauline Hanson, and her release from prison; and specific actions regarding Iraq, Afghanistan, The Solomon Islands, especially John Howard’s tendency to try to be the attention seeking little-brother to George W. Bush and Tony Blair. “Uh huh, uh huh, if you do it, I’ll do it. You’re so cool, George.” Ugh. gets off soapbox

  1. Who did you miss?

That list is also long.. My sister and her family [for the whole year, and for different parts of the year: Steven, my grandparents, my parents, and Clay

I was disappointed by most of the new people I met..

That sometimes, ‘what you want’ and ‘what’s good for you’ are two different things

  1. Did you get a new job in 2003?

Ha. I had four different jobs.

    1. I also just finished reading “The Flamboya Tree” by Clara Olink Kelly, which would be my second for the year, and highly reccomended if you’re into that sort of thing.

      From the back cover: “… touching story of how a mother’s love saved a family of three defenceless children trapped in a brutal Japanese death camp. As Clara Olink Smith honours her mother’s memory we are reminded that not all the heroes of WWII faced the bullets of the battlefields”

      Basically, the author is the midddle of three children of a Dutch family, captured by the Japanese during the invasion of the Indonesian island of Java during WW2, the father was sent to work on the Burma railway, and the mother and three children sent to a “women’s camp”, where they spent the remaining four years of the war. Horrific in many ways, but an amazing story.
